All one needs is a Mac or PC computer and the USB software and you are on your way to practicing, performing, and recording with a full collection of wind instrument sounds. All of these artists have used this instrument to the best of their abilities and so can you. There are so many electric instruments like the electric guitarthe electric base, electric drums set, and even an electric kazoo!

But this specific product is a great and imaginative tool that brings together technology and art. The sound is unlike anything ever heard of. For more than 20 years the electric wind instrument has been revolutionary in changing the way we listen to music.

Early models, created by Nyle Steiner, consisted of two simple parts: a synthesize in a rackmount box and a wind controller. Now many brands combine those 2 parts into a single piece and using the Boehm fingering system which helps the electric wind instrument to sound similar to that of a saxophone.

However, those who are clarinet players would have no issue with the fingering. In fact, newer models allow for recorder players to switch between oboefluteand saxophone fingering modes.

When using an electric wind instrument, one would not be able to tell the difference between it and a normal, non-electric instrument.

But something was missing there for me. Gino Chimenti. This bank sounds damn good! I n terms of playability on the ewithey are all perfect you can see that have been designed by someone who plays a wind instrument.

The ones I like more are those of Metheny, spectacular, it seem to hear him, the number 6 brassand of course those two concerning the Yellow Jackets.

Let me get one thing out of the way at the beginning: This instrument is not, in any sense, a toy. This is a common misconception held by people accustomed to seeing, or playing, standard acoustic musical instruments.

To the contrary, in the right hands the EWI becomes a truly expressive and capable wind instrument. This came as a bit of a revelation to me when I first began playing it. My initial positive impression has only been reinforced as I have gained skill. This page will explore this peculiarly versatile and unusual instrument. All musical instruments, excluding sounds like the human voice and clapping hands, are machines. Pianos, violins, trombones, hi-hats, guitars, timpani, sitars, upright basses, and on and on: They are all devices invented as a means of producing sound, usually pitched, in a controllable fashion.

They can be classified into Percussive drums, chimes, piano, etc. Only the method of sound generation and amplification varies between instrument types, standard instruments being primarily mechanical and directly acoustic. The now nearly ubiquitous practice of full public address system amplification has greatly reduced the directly acoustic aspect during most public performances of live music where very little of the actual direct radiation of sound waves from the instruments reaches the audience.

The primary remaining exceptions to this are in classical music and some acoustic jazz. Anyway, the EWI is just another machine for controllable sound production. The difference is that it uses an electronic, as opposed to a mechanical, means of sound generation and amplification.

It is equally valid as a tool for musical expression - just different and far less familiar. In a recording situation it even has advantages over its mechanical brethren because it is a musical chameleon of sorts and can take on many roles rather effectively, as I hope to demonstrate below.

If I don't succeed, complain to my congress person - or my grocer. Electronic Wind Instruments have been around for over 30 years now, thanks to pioneers like Nyle Steinerbut my personal experience with them began in The outward appearance of the Akai EWI s vaguely resembles that of a clarinet or oboe.

NI Kontakt Sound Libraries and WAV files

Unlike an acoustic instrument, the EWI produces no sound of it's own - instead, it produces electronic data which is used to control electronic sound sources. The data is generated by the sensors in its mouthpiece, contact keys, octave rollers, glide band, and pitchbend sensors. While its layout of keys is similar to a woodwind instrument it can be configured to respond to a variety of different fingering options - general EWI, sax, oboe, flute, and brass.

As a former trumpet and valve trombone player I have chosen to use the brass-like fingering configuration. I mistakenly thought this EVI electronic valve instrument mode would make the learning curve less steep since it partly mimics the three finger patterns of valve instruments that I already knew so intimately.

No matter. As with any instrument, the EWI requires a not-inconsiderable investment of time to acquire the necessary skills to make the operation of the instrument second nature. The s is the advanced, professional instrument and, correspondingly, about twice the price.

In comparison, the EWI USB is intended as a student instrument, although it certainly can be used professionally and often is. There are many extra features in the EWI s compared to the USB but one of the most obvious is the built-in synthesizer. The USB, on the other hand, connects directly to the user's computer through the USB port and triggers software sounds installed on the computer.

It should be said that the EWI s can also trigger sounds installed on a computer or directly trigger a variety of hardware sound modules using its MIDI data output port. Both EWI's require headphones or some type of amplifier and speaker to hear the sound output.

One interestingly relevant point for a portion of the musician population which includes me : The EWI is an intriguing choice for the aging wind musician. Most instruments make physical demands upon a musician's body - demands that can lead to injury and pain.

Compounding this issue is the natural aging process which simultaneously decreases physical capabilities and introduces such wonderful inflammatory calamities like arthritis. Simply put: If you can blow a little air and move your fingers, you can play this instrument.

We live in an awesome age. We have little 4 inch devices that are more powerful than computers that were made less than 8 years ago. Now, there is this very interesting instrument, an Artiphon. CNN had an article on it :. Is it a guitar? Is it a piano?

Nope, it is a crazy iPhone-powered combination of both. Plus it has a built in bass, violin and drum machine to boot. The Artiphon Instrument 1 looks something like a medieval lute, but with a smart phone jammed into its belly. In the Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition was established to showcase and recognize the invention of new musical instruments. Which got me to thinking….

O nce Upon A Time…. There was a wealth of information on wind controllers and stuff. That site now seems dead. In fact, there seems little movement right now in the whole EWI sphere. Akai seems to have stopped with the software updates not that it needs it but things like the Vyzex Editor seem to work OK on the latest version of OS X, but the software itself has not had an update in 5 years…….

Saxophonist John Isley has a site called ewilogic. Simply put…. He has tons of patches he has made, tutorials, tips, tricks……basically everything. Hands down, it is probably the best EWI related site I have seen. Sadly though, that is about it. If anyone knows of some other resources for EWIs please feel free to post about it.

Same for the EWI You could midi it to a computer and spend some money to get a sound library that has a good sax…. I think your best bet would be to just enjoy the analogue sounds you can get out of the EWI ala Michael Brecker. The EWIs comes with a built in analog synthesizer that cannot reproduce real sounding acoustic instruments.

You would have to use an external sound module or software synth to play sampled acoustic instruments like saxophones, etc. One side is the sax — the other side is the EWI.

You can guess which is which …. Besides the sound itself which is pretty close although it was a different horn I can get pretty much the same dynamics, phrasing, vibrato, etc.

This needs practicing the EWI seriously in order to have a control that is similar to the control that you can get on a real sax! The EWI does not do any kind of musical inflections on its own. Those will not give you any reasonable response to your playing!!! Hi, I just started using my new Ewi. You must be logged in to post a comment. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.
